3 Easy Ways to Exercise in College (Without Hitting the Gym!)

Feel like exercising but don't have the time or patience to go to the campus gym? Here are three great ideas to help you get moving.

Don’t have time to hit your school's fitness center but feeling the need to work out? Or maybe you feel uncomfortable with the gym atmosphere and would like to exercise in an alternative manner. Either way, you’ve come to the right place. Here are a few easy ways to get your daily dose of exercise without visiting the campus gym.

1. Take a walk

Incredibly basic, we know—but seriously, walking is an underrated form of fitness, and it's so easy to do! According to the American Heart Association, walking does a slew of good things for your health. It can improve your blood pressure, reduce the risk of cancer, decrease the chance of heart disease, and even boost your mental health—not to mention, it burns a few calories and helps maintain your weight. This exercise is perfect for spring, so lace up your tennis shoes and take a walk around campus—you’ll find it refreshing.

2. Watch YouTube

Yeah, you read that right. Surf YouTube for workout videos that are simple to emulate in your dorm room! We recommend Body Talk Daily Videos for quick exercises—they’re great if you have a big load of homework waiting for you on your desk. If you’re looking for something a bit more extensive, try videos that are tailored for dorm living. You could even round up your roommates and have a little fun following a dance class video together!

3. Ride your bike

Biking is the perfect exercise for students living in a college town. Ride your bike to class, ride your bike to the store, ride your bike to your friend’s apartment. The health benefits are plentiful! If you ride a bicycle on a regular basis, you’ll improve your cardiovascular fitness, reduce stress, improve your posture, and strengthen your muscles. Bonus: If you have a car, this will save you gas money.

High School Class of 2021

I'm a senior in high school, and CollegeXpress has helped me in so many ways this year in trying to navigate the process of deciding and committing to a university. The COVID-19 Student Resource Center has helped me many times with the most up-to-date and accurate information, along with financial aid and student life [advice]. During these uncertain times, CollegeXpress has been a great recourse to relieve the stress as a senior. Along with the COVID-19 Student Resource Center, I'm constantly using the extremely helpful tools off the site to aid me during this stressful process. Tools like the lists and rankings of universities have been the most beneficial. I've also used the site to receive expert advice on topics like financial aid. Finally, CollegeXpress has helped me easily apply for several scholarships. I'm thankful to be given the chance to win a scholarship to lessen the burden of my college debt.

As a UK student moving to California due to my dad's job in the military, when I first signed up for CollegeXpress a few months ago, the college process ahead seemed daunting and incredibly stressful. That all changed after I started to explore what this website had to offer. Not only was I helped by the vast array of resources available to me, but through being a CollegeXpress member, there have been so many more benefits. There have been emails with college tips—all of which I found incredibly helpful—as well as invitations to events and notifications of scholarships that'll make college possible for me. Overall, I'm very grateful to CollegeXpress for all of these things and more. Not only have they helped me grow my understanding of the college process, but they've also helped me to grow as a person, giving me new skills that I can take with me through life.

I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on CollegeXpress.
