Video: Going to College in a Different Country

Want to know what it's like to attend college in another country? Watch student vlogger Jordan-Paige's video to learn more about her experiences abroad.

Going to college outside the US might seem intimidating and lonely—you’re living and studying in a foreign country where you know no one, after all. But it doesn’t have to feel that way. This could be one of the greatest experiences of your life! It is for student vlogger Jordan-Paige; she’s from Texas but is currently studying Film in Vancouver, Canada. While Canada is 3,000 miles away from her home, family, and friends, she knew it was the right choice. Watch the video below to hear Jordan-Paige’s story of why she chose to go to college in Canada and her advice for students thinking about studying abroad for the long term.

Why going abroad could be great for you

Jordan-Paige chose to study abroad in Canada because she found a school that offered her everything she was looking for in a new and exciting place. They had the right classes and professors, and she had a chance to visit the school and loved the campus. But how did she survive being so far away from her family? Here’s her top advice if you’re thinking of attending college in another country:

  1. Find a community of people that make you feel comfortable.
  2. Call home often to keep in touch with your parents, siblings, and friends.
  3. Be open-minded and enthusiastic about learning with classmates from around the world who’ll provide new perspectives on life.
  4. Learn to enjoy getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things.

While Jordan would highly recommend studying outside the US for college, it doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. You have to do your research (and some soul searching) to make sure it could really benefit you and make you happy. If you feel you could thrive studying abroad for longer than a semester, why second guess it? You’ll only be missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

When I started looking at colleges in the beginning of my senior year, I was conflicted about which ones I wanted to attend based on safety, tuition costs, location, academic rigor, and prestige. Searching the internet and getting more questions than answers, I came across CollegeXpress, which made all the steps I had taken look like a minor issue. Everything was summarized and detailed, and I couldn't be more thankful and appreciative.

Toward the beginning of last year, I was searching for scholarships to apply to through my school, town, websites online, and anything else I could find. I asked tons of questions [online] about scholarships and the best places to find them because I was desperate and needed as many as I could find. I came across a ton of bogus websites, but as soon as I found CollegeXpress, I knew I had to tell other people about it. It was definitely the most helpful site I came across, so I told my friends about it. CollegeXpress is definitely a website worth giving as a source.

I wanted a school that wasn't too far away from home and could provide me with a full-ride scholarship. CollegeXpress helped me put into perspective the money I had to pay to attend those schools, which ultimately drove me to choose to attend a community college first to get used to being in college before transferring to the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, one of the colleges I was able to research further on CollegeXpress.
